Puppy Vaccines Assure Wagging Tails and Wet Noses

When you get a new puppy it is imperative that he receive all his proper puppy vaccines.
These protect him from getting diseases if he becomes exposed to them.
When the pet doctor injects a vaccine into your puppy, it "teaches" the pup's immune system what a disease organism looks like. But the vaccine contains only weak or dead versions of the organism, so the puppy's immune system learns to recognize it, but without the danger of serious infection. Later in life, if the organism ever attacks, the puppy's immune system is already prepared to fight it off because of the vaccine. When a puppy receives a puppy vaccine, his body forms antibodies that can fight that particular disease.

With the antibody already in the puppy's system, it will have a better chance of fighting off the infection.Puppies should receive their puppy vaccines beginning when they are under the age of four months.
Your vet will know which vaccines to give, and in what order.
It's also important to give booster shots. These keep the puppy vaccines current.
You need to do this so that your puppy's immunity continues to be strong.

Some vets have a reminder system, and will phone you or send out a postcard to let you know when it's time for booster shots. However, it's good if you also keep your own records of all shots, medical treatments and puppy vaccines, so you'll know when it's time. If you have questions about the puppy vaccines, be sure to ask your vet for more information.
Your vet will know which vaccines your puppy should receive, no matter when or where you purchased or adopted your pet.
When you adopt or purchase a puppy, remember to ask if he has received any of the puppy vaccines.

Some breeders and pet shelters are very responsible and make sure that the first puppy vaccines have already been given. It's also important to keep in mind that giving puppy vaccines is not successful 100% of the time.
Some puppies have weaker immune systems.
This means that a puppy can come down sick with a disease even if he has received all the proper puppy vaccines at all the right times.
If your puppy seems to be ill, even if he has received all his vaccines, don't hesitate to contact your vet. It is very important for the health of your puppy that, in addition to receiving all his puppy vaccines, you also need to keep a careful eye on how your puppy is feeling and acting.

This will help you keep your pet alive, healthy and happy for many years to come..

Dog Training - Simplified

Dog training is both frustrating and rewarding.
It kills you to torment your poor puppy for months on end, trying to get them to understand commands that to them probably seem irrelevant and arbitrary.
However, when they finally learn it is best for all.
You are happy because they no longer eat your furniture or run away from you in the park.
I am also convinced the puppy is now happier because he has learned how to manipulate you.

He has learned that when you are happy you give him treats and he has also learned the things that are most likely to make you happy.

This is of course a beneficial relationship for all concerned.
You get what you want and the dog gets what he wants, making everyone more pleased.
Some people say that the dog is actually happier because it craves rules and boundaries.
Dogs will test you to see how far they can push you because they want you to define their limitations, to...

Buying a New Puppy? How to Avoid the Pitfalls

Many books and articles have been written regarding the art of choosing a puppy (i.e. performing puppy tests, looking for parental OFA certifications, and so on...), but few, if any, discuss the contractual end of purchasing a puppy. I can tell you through personal experience that purchasing a quality show puppy from a famous breeder can be quite a stressful experience because no breeder would give up the pick of the litter to a competitor (for obvious reasons) or to a novice without co-ownership of the puppy. Co-ownership of a puppy entitles the breeder to many rights to the detriment of the buyer. To begin with, the breeder might also be an experienced handler and might contractually require the purchaser to use the breeder as the puppies' trainer and handler.

Agreeing to this could be a monumental mistake because the purchaser might be required to pay (even though they might be co-owners) for the breeders time to train and handle the puppy. Agreeing to this can COST you THOUSANDS...

Uses for Dog Crates

If you own dogs, chances are you've either used or considered using dog crates for puppy training. Or you've planned a trip and wanted to take your best friend along and thought about them as pet carriers. But while puppy training and animal transport are important considerations, dog crates serve another purpose that might be even more important for your pet's quality of life ? a safe den. Dog crates offer an enclosed space that canines naturally crave. Millions of years of evolution have instilled this desire.

That being the case, it's very important while puppy training that you teach your pet early on that his crate is safe and a good place. Never use it as a form of punishment! Another use for dog crates beyond puppy training is as a place to recuperate from an injury or illness. This is especially advantageous if you have two or more dogs. Sick and injured animals, canines included, seek solitude while healing. They can be temperamental and even dangerous, even if normally...

Puppy Behavior and Training

Puppy training can be a trying time. The key to this time is to really remember that all puppy behavior is normal. They like to mouth, jump, bark, dig and piddle wherever they are. They aren't doing it to annoy you, they are just doing what they have learned so far. It is our job to train them not to do these things.

Think of it as teaching your child to read. You wouldn't punish your child for not knowing the alphabet if they have never seen it before right? So we don't need to punish our puppies for things we haven't taught them. Here, we will talk about normal puppy behavior and ways to encourage them to try something new. Remember - Behavior that is followed by something the dog likes will increase! puppy training should be a lot of fun! Puppy behaviorJumping: There are two ways to solve this - first, stand on their leash. Second, teach them to sit.

By teaching sit we are removing the desire to jump. Mouthing: See this full article on puppy mouthing. Pulling: This one...

Dachshund Puppies

Dachshunds make loving, lively, active and intelligent pets. Their short legs and muscular long bodies give them a distinctive appearance, and rare is the person who can walk past one without instinctively smiling at its quaint look. Independent and stubborn, Dachshunds need firm handling from a very young age, but are otherwise easy to look after.

Puppies are available for sale from dog breeders, or can be adopted from rescues. It is a good idea to thoroughly research the breed before you bring a pup home. Though highly adaptable, Dachshunds have some peculiar characteristics that might not make them suitable pets for all homes.

They are hunters by nature and might not get along with other pets. Unless socialized they do not take very well to young children either. Dachshunds also like to bark, which can be a problem in apartment buildings or with close-by neighbors. You will also need tremendous patience to train a Dachshund puppy, since it can be a trifle stubborn...

No Paws from Santa Claus

The Holidays are coming and children have thought long and hard about the gifts they would most want to receive this year.
Trucks, trains, Groovey girls and scooters are popular gifts this year.
Each year lists are filled with the "most popular" toys of that year.
There is one thing each year that can be found on many children's lists.
A
puppy.

The image of a bright eyed plump adorable pup dressed in a red bow is an irresistible one.
Or is it?
Giving a life for a gift is something to think very carefully about.
Puppies grow up quickly, cost a lot and need a life long commitment. As a Professional Dog Trainer and Breed rescue volunteer, I have seen many sad endings for these once so irresistible pups.
Spring comes around and the pup is now sixty or so pounds and full of unappreciated energy and spunk...
